Take Ten with John - Day 20!

Today we finish off the 7 People in John's Gospel with a summary of the final four because we've covered them already!  On Monday we start the 7 I Am statements of Jesus.

We're halfway through!  Keep at it and we'll end before Memorial Day!

Here's the video:

And here's a wonderful peformance by Carrie Underwood entitled My Savior.  I think you'll enjoy it!

Take Ten with John - Day 19!

Today we're on John 4:1-45 - Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan Woman at the Well!  If you can, please read through these verses - it's the longest interaction that Jesus has with any person in any of the Gospels!  And it's a Samaritan woman!  We just left John 3:16 yesterday with Nicodemus, a high ranking member of society, and today we see how far that love of God goes - even to the dregs of society, the sinful Samaritan woman at the well!

So read the verses and listen in!

And here's a wonderful song by Lauren Daigle entitled "Hold On To Me."  Enjoy!

Take Ten with John - Day 18!

Today we're on the second day with John 3:16 with some interesting things you should know about the Greek manuscripts and they way they were written.  You're now a student of John, so we can delve into this a bit more!  Also, I want to share with you my favorite John 3:16 story!  So listen in!

And here's the National Lutheran Choir singing "God So Loved the World."  Beautiful!

Take Ten with John - Day 17!

Today we're on John 3 and the familiar story of Nicodemus.  Good old Nic was a Pharisee, who knew a lot about God, but didn't really know God.  He had head knowledge, but not a heart relationship.  So Jesus says you gotta have a fresh start - you have to start anew - you have to be born again/born anew.  It's a fascinating Second Person that John presents in our encounter with Jesus.  We'll take two days to look at this story because there's so much there!

Here's the video, so listen in:

And here's Lauren Daigle singing You Say.  Beautiful song - so sing along!

Take Ten with John - Day 16!

Today we start with the 7 People that John focuses his attention on.  We've looked at the 7 Signs, now the 7 People, and then we'll look at the 7 "I Am" statements of Jesus.

Today we'll look at John the Baptist, who is the first person Jesus encounters as he begins his public ministry.  Read ahead in John 1:19-51 and then listen in!

Here's another song I love - No Longer Slaves.  Great song to start the week!  "I am a Child of God!"

Take Ten with John - Day 15!

Today we finish off the 7 Signs with some final comments about the raising of Lazarus.  And what's interesting is that Jesus is portrayed with more emotion in the way John tells the story of Lazarus than any other place in the Gospels!  It includes the shortest verse in the Bible, John 11:35 - "Jesus wept."  It's an amazing conclusion to the story, so I hope you enjoy!

Here's the video:

And here's a song which I love - Blessed Be Your Name.  Sing along!

Take Ten with John - Day 14!

Today we're on the 7th and final sign - the raising of Lazarus in John 11.  If you can, read through the entire chapter before listening to the video - you'll see how John so masterfully tells not only the story, but the theological interpretation of the story.  And in the end, this is what pushed the Pharisees to try to put Jesus to death.  It's an utterly fascinating story!  We'll look at it again tomorrow to round out the focus on these 7 signs.  Here's the video:

And I love this song, Holy Spirit You are Welcome Here.  Appropriate for our verses today!

Take Ten with John - Day 13!

Today we're on the second day of looking at John chapter 9 and the reactions of the people to the healing of the man born blind!  We can see throughout the rest of the chapter that everyone is indeed blind - except Jesus!  They just can't understand what is going on.  And the progression of faith in the man born blind is such an amazing movement - from knowing that "the man Jesus" healed him, to saying that Jesus must be a prophet, to professing faith in Jesus and worshipping him.  This is done because that's the kind of faith that John wants to cultivate in those who follow Jesus!  Read the entire chapter 9 of John and then listen in!

And here's the Living Stones Quartet singing "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus."  That's what John's Gospel calls us to do.  Sing along with this beautiful arrangement!

Take Ten with John - Day 12!

Today we're spending two days on the 6th Sign in John 9, which tells of the man born blind. It's such a fascinating story because there's not just the healing, but an entire story around the people who tried to interpret the healing! What's interesting is that everyone in the chapter (except Jesus) is blind - they stumble around trying to understand the meaning of this healing. And the progression of the blind man's faith is a step by step process that slowly is revealed. Truly a fascinating way to tell a story!

Listen in to the video:

And here's a wonderful piece by Rosemary Siemens, recording Amazing Grace on piano, voice, and violin. Very beautiful version - "was blind, but now I see" fits in to our lesson, of course!

Take Ten with John - Day 11!

Today we join Jesus and the disciples in the verses immediately following the 4th Sign - the Feeding of the 5,000. The Fifth Sign starts in John 6:15, where Jesus went up the mountain to pray, while his disciples went to the other side of the sea in the boat, whereupon a big storm arose! Yes, this is Jesus walking on the water, but with some important differences, so listen in!

And here's a great Casting Crowns sound entitled "Praise You In This Storm." Seems appropriate for our lesson today!

Take Ten with John - Day 10!

We end our second week of Take Ten with John with the second part of the Feeding of the 5,000 - with some fascinating details about the way in which John tells this story!  He's interested in some of the finer details of the encounter of Jesus with the disciples, and the crowds, and tells this wonderful story with details that are unique to his own Gospel  So listen in and enjoy!

Here's a wonderful song, beautifully done, that's familiar to sing along with.  Enjoy!

Take Ten with John - Day 9!

We're on the fourth sign of Jesus, this time from John 6:1-15 - the feeding of the 5,000!  And again, it's such a rich story that we're taking two days on this sign, too!  Read the verses before listening to the blog and I hope you learn some new things about this old familiar story!

Here's the video:

And here's a favorite for those of us at Zion - Wonderful, Merciful Savior.  Sing along!

Take Ten with John - Day 8!

Today we look at the larger picture of the healing of the man by the pool that took place (God forbid!) on the Sabbath!  What flows throughout the rest of chapter 5 is the theological interpretation of what this whole healing meant - and it starts the conflict with the Jewish authorities!  And what's interesting is that the man that was healed had no idea who Jesus was!  He was pretty clueless - no faith, no connection with Jesus - he was just healed in order that God's glory might be revealed!

So continue to peel back the layers of this story as you listen in!

And here's a song that is basically the creed - This I Believe.  Enjoy!

Take Ten with John - Day 7!

Today we're on the third of the seven signs - this one is the healing of the man who had been at the pool, sick and unable to move, for 38 years.  We'll take two days on this story - it's interesting that this "sign" takes up the entre chapter 5!  The healing is in 5:1-9 which ends with an ominous verse:  "Now that day was the sabbath."  This begins the opposition to Jesus, which is heightened at the end of chapter 11, after the 7th sign - the raising of Lazarus - and the Jews sought to put Jesus to death.

So - listen in to the video!

And I love this version of Mighty to Save with Laura Story.  Hope you enjoy it and sing along!

Take Ten with John - Day 6!

Today we're looking at the second sign - from John chapter 4 about the healing of a royal official's son, from a distance.  The official had walked 18 miles to see Jesus to ask if he would heal his son, and Jesus had a brief encounter with him.  And the result was faith - faith both of the official and his household.  That fulfilled John's purpose of writing his Gospel - so that you might believe!

Here's the video:

And here's a great version of "Because He Lives."  Enjoy and sing along!

Take Ten with John - Day 5!

Welcome to Day 5!  We'll take the weekend off, and begin again on Monday.

I've thought it would be a good exercise to go through the 7 signs, then the 7 people, and then the 7 "I Am" statements of Jesus.  John organizes his Gospel around those encounters, so that will take us 21 (or more!) days, and then we'll spend some time with the Upper Room Discourse, the death of Jesus, and the post-resurrection appearances.

Here's the blog - I'm trying to keep it under 10 minutes but it's been a real challenge!  I'll try to do better next week...

And here's a favorite song of mine - Glorious Day by Casting Crowns.  Hope you enjoy it!

Take Ten with John - Day 4!

Today I want to tell you just a little more background to the philosophic context in which John was writing, and talk about the Application Bridge between John's time and ours, and the timeless principles that still speak the truth through the ages.  Today we just see how the beginning of John's Gospel captures the imagination of the Greek and Jewish high brow people to whom John was writing.  It's such a fascinating Gospel, so listen in!

And here's a song I've loved for a long time - My Redeemer Lives by Nicole Mullen.  Enjoy!

Take Ten with John - Day 3!

Today is a little more of a bird's eye view of the structure of the Gospel of John, but will be helpful in going forward to understand what John is trying to do in his presentation of who Jesus is.  I hope you are keeping a notebook handy just to sketch out some of the details.  Here's the video:

And here's a wonderful version of Great is Thy Faithfulness.  Enjoy and sing along!

Take Ten with John - Day 2!

Today I'll talk a little more about John and how he organizes his Gospel  He's an incredibly articulate writer and organizes his Gospel around:

7 Signs (or miracles)

7 People

7 "I Am" statements

As we go through his Gospel you'll see how incredibly well thought out his presentation of Jesus is, all written in order that you might believe!

Here's the video - and sorry about the abrupt ending!

And here's a wonderfully put together medley of Easter songs by Anthem Lights - Enjoy!
